The UK Government has introduced legislation requiring online platforms to remove intimate or abusive images within 48 hours of notification, establishing one of the world's most stringent digital content enforcement regimes.

The UK Government has introduced legislation mandating that online platforms remove intimate or abusive images, including AI-generated deepfake content, within 48 hours of receiving a notification from the affected individual or an authorised reporting body. The law, introduced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), establishes one of the most robust digital content enforcement frameworks globally and carries significant financial penalties for platforms that fail to comply.

The legislation extends existing online safety obligations and reflects the UK's increasingly assertive posture on platform regulation. Technology companies operating in the UK must implement compliant detection and removal workflows within the timeframes specified, with independent auditing requirements for platforms above defined user thresholds. The law also introduces a right of appeal and mandatory transparency reporting on removal rates.

For the UK–Pakistan technology partnership, the UK's continued legislative activity on online safety and platform regulation creates demand for specialised compliance technology. Pakistani companies with expertise in content moderation, AI-assisted detection, and platform compliance tooling may find the UK regulatory environment a compelling market opportunity. UPTECH can facilitate introductions between Pakistani RegTech and content safety companies and UK platform operators navigating new compliance obligations.
