UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has unveiled a £1.6 billion AI strategy targeting areas where the UK can establish global leadership, from healthcare AI to climate technology and advanced manufacturing.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has unveiled a landmark £1.6 billion national artificial intelligence strategy that identifies specific sectors and technologies where the United Kingdom is positioned to achieve global leadership. The strategy, announced in February 2026, moves beyond broad AI investment rhetoric to make focused bets on healthcare AI, climate and clean energy technology, advanced manufacturing, and AI safety research, areas where existing UK research strengths and industrial base create sustainable competitive advantage.

The strategy establishes new AI Frontier Institutes co-locating academic researchers with industry partners, expands the UK's compute infrastructure through national AI supercomputing investments, and creates dedicated international collaboration frameworks, with partner countries including Canada, the United States, and India, for joint AI research and standards development.

For the UK–Pakistan technology partnership, the UKRI AI strategy creates opportunities for Pakistani AI researchers and companies to engage with UK AI programmes through the strategy's international collaboration framework. UPTECH is exploring whether Pakistan can be positioned as a formal partner nation within specific UKRI AI programmes, leveraging Pakistan's AI Declaration and the bilateral technology partnership agenda to create structured research and commercial linkages.
